"When the well is dry, we know the worth of water."
– Benjamin Franklin

The Sustainability Solutions Institute at UC San Diego is designing a regional initiative to understand how to achieve water sustainability through the "UC San Diego Water Collaborative." This involves research and experimentation to stimulate, demonstrate, and evaluate water conservation and re-use strategies.

The ultimate goal of the UCSD Water Collaborative is to make sure we all have enough clean water. We propose to do this by repsonding with innovation to the challenges of climate change and population growth that are reducing the availability of water in the Southern California region. The near-term goal is to assess the feasibility of the UCSD Campus becoming "water neutral" by 2020.

The UCSD Water Collaborative will include:

  • Conceptual study evaluating technologies and practices for readiness, cost, and potential impact.
  • Technical seminars for innovators and practitioners to share ideas and best practices.
  • Public outreach meetings to present progress and engage with the broader community.
  • A network of partners from water agencies, other universities, non-profit organizations, and the business community.
